Exhibition text

The philosopher Johan Huizinga refers to the boundary of reality that we cross when we accept as possible the conditions of another dimension—one into which play transports us—as the “magic circle.” Thus, the use of fiction and fantastical, folkloric, or magical imaginaries allows us to step outside a codified space and time, to question its limits and rigidity.
Drawing on narrative, fictional, and playful forms plucked from the heart of phantasmagorical worlds—ranging from cartoons to horror movies—this exhibition explores these iconic references through multiple lenses, as new strategies of representation.
