Drawing on photographs, Luisa Ardila’s paintings take the form of collages that blend a sense of space with intimacy. Her loved ones pose solemnly against everyday backdrops: from the opulent villas on Boulevard Michelet to the rocky coves of Luminy, via the football stadium on the university campus.
Luisa Ardila plays with the superimposition of flat areas of colour and the juxtaposition of elements like multiple projection screens: here, a building; further on, a detail; and right here, directly in front, a presence. However, whilst the work, at first glance, appears to be a testimony, it actually exudes a truncated familiarity, a fragmented memory.
By stretching the paint until it becomes thin, the artist influences our perception through varying degrees of sharpness; the identity of the characters-extras becomes blurred and the settings fade. It is up to each viewer to reconstruct the narrative of these recomposed images.
