Exhibition text

For his first solo exhibition, Johan CHRIST-BERTRAND presents TELESCOPE.S: a linear hanging of four paintings created between 2017 and 2020, spanning from his final years of study to his early post-graduation period.

This scenographic protocol emphasizes the rigidity of the canvas edges in order to better reveal the details of fantasy. It materializes each stage of transition, the struggles and symbols marking the shift from “student” to “artist.” TELESCOPE.S brings together, on the same plane, memories of Alsatian family life and its conclusion in Théophanie, while Icônes reflects the transfer of traditional cultural references into the universe of role-playing games. Hikiko / Memento Mori portrays the affliction of a recent graduate, while the most recent work, Untitled (Who’s watching the Watchmen), denounces the demolition of the Ponchettes gallery in Nice, further reducing the spaces dedicated to contemporary creation in the city.
