AMALIA LAURENT
All that we see or seem, is but a scene within the scene
Exhibition text

For her first solo exhibition at sissi club, Amalia Laurent presents a new body of work centered on repetition — as gesture, transmission, and memory.

The exhibition draws on her batik practice, an ancestral Indonesian wax-printing technique connected to ornamentation, cartography, and transmission, as well as on the creation of cap [tʃap], a copper printing tool developed by the artist from traditional Indonesian motifs, enabling their repetition and layering across textile surfaces.

Through textile, imprint, rhythm, and spatial composition, the works explore repetition as a mode of learning and circulation — in which gestures, patterns, and sounds are reproduced, transmitted, and carried through time. Here, repetition is not understood as duplication, but as a living structure shaped by memory, inheritance, and collective movement.

Following her residency year at Villa Medici in 2024–2025, the exhibition extends both Laurent’s long-term research and the body of work developed in Java, recently presented at Espace Croisé as part of her solo exhibition Intervalles, and soon to be shown in Béthune in the group exhibition Déplier les mondes.

The exhibition text is written by curator Alia Swastika.
